World Music
"From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia"

Traditional music (sometimes called folk music or roots music) of any culture that are created and played by indigenous musicians or that are "closely informed or guided by indigenous music of the regions of their origin," including Western music (ie. Celtic music). Most typically, the term world music has now replaced folk music as a shorthand description for the very broad range of recordings of traditional indigenous music and song from around the world.

In essence, the term "world music" refers to any form of music that is not part of modern mainstream Western commercial popular music or classical music traditions, and which typically originates from outside the cultural sphere of Western Europe and the English-speaking nations..

...now that's still pretty much a very broad description, however, Wiki also adds:

In musical terms, "world music" can be roughly defined as music which uses distinctive ethnic scales, modes and musical inflections, and which is usually (though not always) performed on or accompanied by distinctive traditional ethnic instruments, such as the kora (African lute), the steel drum, the sitar or the digeridoo (or in the case of our local sounds, instruments such as the kumintangs, bongos, banduryas, etc. Wink).

Most typically, the term "world music" has now replaced "folk music" as a shorthand description for the very broad range of recordings of traditional indigenous music and song from the so-called Third World countries.

...and this additional definition alone pretty much takes the cake for me. World Music gives you a rich and very diverse selection of music to choose from. It pretty much covers a very wide base of cultural genres from the upbeat rhythms of Latin and Carribean music like Samba and Calypso, to the more contemplative chants and pluckings of Tibetan and Japanese folk music and it also covers the more exotic tribal sounds of the Australian Aborigines and their digeridoos as well as the ethnic music of the African nations.

---------------

Filipino world music in a sense can be creditted to more culturally-inclined / rootsy / native / folky / ethnic / indigenous-sounding music of such individuals like Joey Ayala, Grace Nono, Bayang Barrios and groups such as Pinikpikan, Kadangyan, KaTribu and Tugma among others.

and to our local Iloilo artists like

Armor
Tribu ni Mali
Maharlika Bahandi

wehehe

afrobeat ?! well sa context of world music then..

I'd still prefer traditional Filipino indigenous sounds and instruments..

Indiomusic and IndioGenius culture as Kidlat Tahimik would always coin.. wehehe
